Dealing with Chronic Pain and Endometriosis

Chelsea has endometriosis; an inflammatory disease of the reproductive system that affects 1 in 10 New Zealand women. Simply put, Endometriosis occurs when tissue that should be growing inside the uterus, grows outside the uterus where it shouldn’t be. Pain can vary from a dull aching to sharp, stabbing pains in the reproductive system while also affecting other areas such as the pelvis, legs and spine.

Eric’s Story

Dealing with Chronic Pain and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Eric has played Lawn Bowls for nearly 20 years but was forced to stop playing in 2017 due to the chronic pain associated with his Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis or RA, is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue, mostly in the joints, creating inflammation.

Kaleb’s Uplifting Story

Born in the Bay of Plenty, Kaleb has had a challenging start to life. He suffers from Sotos syndrome, a rare genetic disorder which combines several developmental issues. Apart from a distinctive facial appearance, Sotos syndrome is often associated with intellectual disability and various behavioural problems, such asattention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), compulsive behaviours and tantrums.

It all started in 2003 when Pat discovered she had a non cancerous tumour in her bowel removed. During the process, and without her knowledge or consent, surgical mesh was placed inside. While the surgery was a success in removing the tumour, it started her on a long road of chronic pain.

Anxiety has been with Rachel for more than 20 years since she was a teenager. She has tried multiple medications over the years alongside counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and practising mindfulness. These treatments would help, but would not be sufficient for her to live her life to the fullest.
