Alex Dowds was born in Auckland and grew up in Katikati in the Bay of Plenty, where Alex still lives today. Alex completed a Bachelor of Nursing at Waiariki Institute of Technology in Tauranga, followed by a Master of Nursing with First Class Honours at the University of Auckland. With 10 years of experience, Alex has worked extensively with people living with complex and long-term health conditions, with expertise in vascular medicine, wound care, cardiovascular health and advanced clinical assessment.
Alex’s interest in medicinal cannabis grew through working with patients managing long-term symptoms and complex health conditions, and a wish to broaden the treatment options available to them. Alex values taking the time to understand what matters to each patient, explaining options in clear, everyday language, and developing a treatment plan together.
Alex is passionate about improving equitable access to healthcare, particularly for Māori and Pacific peoples, rural communities, LGBTQIA+ communities and others who may face barriers to care, and believes everyone deserves compassionate, culturally safe and inclusive healthcare.
Outside of work, Alex enjoys caring for a much-loved menagerie of miniature horses and a pug, and loves travelling, gardening, getting outdoors and walking along the beach.
