FAQs

Yes, Kiwis have been able to access legal medicinal cannabinoids from NZ doctors and specialists since 2018. Cannabis Clinic is a leading specialist clinic, and we aim to improve access to medical cannabis by providing access to medicinal cannabinoids online.

If you’re suffering from a severe health condition, you should only use cannabis under the guidance of your doctor or a medical practitioner. If you’re ready to learn more about medicinal cannabinoids and their potential value for your current health situation, book an initial consultation with one of our medicinal cannabis doctors.

You can also read more about the legality of CBD oil and medicinal cannabis in New Zealand here.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural compound from the cannabis plant with therapeutic potential when it interacts with the body. It doesn’t cause impairment or a high; instead, it works alongside the endocannabinoid system, our natural hormonal system.

The endocannabinoid system plays a part in many of the body’s biological responses, such as cell communication, appetite, immune system, metabolism, sleep, memory, and more.

You can read more about CBD oil here.

People turn to medicinal cannabis for several reasons, such as preferring plant-based medicines, not having success with conventional medications and treatments, and experiencing side effects with other medications.

If you’re suffering from chronic pain, neuropathy, or psychiatric conditions, you may see the value in exploring medicinal cannabis. However, medicinal cannabis isn’t suitable for everyone. Make a booking with one of our experienced doctors to see if medicinal cannabis is an appropriate option for you.

New Zealand patients can now access CBD oil and medical cannabis with a prescription to receive support for conditions like insomnia and other sleep issues, migraines, pain, fibromyalgia, and gastrointestinal problems.

CBD oil works with the body’s cannabis hormonal system, the endocannabinoid system. As a result, you might experience calmness, relief from pain, and reduced anxiety resulting from CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects. THC oil might also be helpful for severe pain symptoms and sleeping/insomnia.

As scientific evidence for medicinal cannabis can be in its infancy or limited for specific conditions, Cannabis Clinic prescribes it on a case-by-case basis. If you’d like to learn more about medicinal cannabis and whether it’s right for you, book in with one of our doctors to assess your suitability for treatment.

Client safety is our priority, so as well as completing the Patient Information Form, we need you to provide us with some background medical notes before your consultation to ensure our clinicians provide you with a personalised treatment plan appropriate for your needs.

Where relevant, the background medical notes need to include a record of your condition (where possible), previous and current other medical conditions, previous adverse reactions to medicines, allergies to medicines and concurrent or recent use of medicines.

There are several options for how you can request and receive your medical history notes and decide which option is best for you, including a referral letter from your GP. Please see more on the Background Medical Notes for Bookings page.

Unfortunately, Pharmac doesn’t currently subsidise medicinal cannabis products in New Zealand. As a result, patients seeking it will need to fund it themselves. How much you pay for medical cannabis in NZ can depend on the product and dose your doctor recommends.

Learn more about medicinal cannabis pricing here, and book with one of our doctors today for a tailored treatment plan to manage your health symptoms.

New Zealanders have access to a range of medicinal cannabis products, including CBD oil, capsules, and flower. Not all products are suitable for all needs, so make a booking with one of our doctors to learn more about the most appropriate CBD products for your personal health requirements.

Yes, we can send your script to your local pharmacy for you to collect. However, we can also securely ship your medication to your door with our preferred pharmacy.

We can help if your doctor has previously prescribed you a medicinal cannabis product. After your appointment, you will also be able to contact our clinical team with updates about your experience or to have any questions answered.

You can drive while taking medicinal cannabis in NZ if you do not feel impaired. CBD oil does not affect your thinking or cause you to become impaired. However, we recommend not driving for at least eight hours if you have ingested THC products.

It is your responsibility to remain safe while driving, and you must regularly assess your driving abilities. If you find that your concentration levels or poor coordination are affecting your ability to perform tasks such as household chores, refrain from driving. Discuss your concerns or ability to drive with your prescribing doctor.

Medicinal cannabis may show up positive on a drug test. However, a positive test can be product-dependent. CBD products will not provide a positive result, but THC products will. Discuss this issue with your prescribing doctor during your consultation if you’re unsure about drug testing and medicinal cannabis.

However, you are entitled to use a legal prescription medication, which is what medicinal cannabis is when prescribed by a doctor at Cannabis Clinic. If required, we can provide you with letters of support and advocacy and support you on your health journey.

We do not recommend taking medicinal cannabis if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Scientific studies into the safety of medicinal cannabis while pregnant or breastfeeding are inconclusive, so we recommend waiting.
