Who is eligible for medicinal cannabis in NZ?

In New Zealand, medicinal cannabis is available by prescription. There is no single list of qualifying conditions, and taking our eligibility quiz does not guarantee that you will receive a prescription. Instead, an authorised prescriber considers your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments and whether medicinal cannabis could be a suitable option for you.

If you are wondering whether you qualify for medicinal cannabis, your prescriber will generally consider the following:

  • Your condition or symptoms. You may be experiencing ongoing symptoms that have not been adequately managed with existing treatment. Your prescriber will assess whether medicinal cannabis is clinically appropriate.
  • Treatments you have already tried. Medicinal cannabis is generally not considered a first-line treatment. Your clinician will want to understand which medicines or other approaches you have used and how well they worked.
  • Your age and medical history. Age is an important safety consideration, particularly for younger patients. Your prescriber will also review relevant medical conditions, mental health history and any medicines or supplements you take.
  • Your access to prescribing and follow-up care. Patients in New Zealand can discuss medicinal cannabis with a local authorised prescriber. Your clinician will consider whether appropriate monitoring, prescribing and dispensing arrangements are available.

You do not have to see a specialist cannabis clinic to explore treatment. Any medical practitioner or nurse practitioner registered to practise in New Zealand can prescribe medicinal cannabis products that meet the applicable quality standard. Certain products may also be prescribed by pharmacist prescribers within their legal scope.

Our free eligibility quiz offers a starting point for understanding whether a consultation may be worthwhile. It is not a medical assessment, diagnosis or prescription. A healthcare professional makes the final decision after reviewing your individual circumstances.

Medicinal cannabis eligibility FAQs

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You do not need a GP referral to book a consultation with Cannabis Clinic. You can contact a medicinal cannabis clinic directly, or discuss treatment with your existing GP. Your prescriber will review your health history, symptoms and previous treatments before deciding whether a prescription is appropriate.

Which conditions qualify for medicinal cannabis?

New Zealand does not have a fixed list of medical conditions that automatically qualify someone for medicinal cannabis. People may seek advice about symptoms such as chronic pain, sleep difficulties or certain neurological conditions, but eligibility depends on a clinician’s assessment of the individual. A particular diagnosis does not guarantee a prescription, and medicinal cannabis may not be suitable for everyone.

What happens after the eligibility quiz?

The quiz provides an initial indication of whether exploring medicinal cannabis with a healthcare professional may be worthwhile. You can then choose to speak with the Cannabis Clinic team or arrange a consultation. A prescriber will review your symptoms, medical history, current medicines, previous treatments and potential risks before discussing whether treatment is suitable. Completing the quiz does not automatically result in a prescription.

Is there a medicinal cannabis card or licence in NZ?

You do not need a special medical cannabis licence or government-issued cannabis card to receive prescribed medicinal cannabis in New Zealand. The legal basis for accessing your medicine is a valid prescription issued by an authorised prescriber and dispensed through a pharmacy. Some clinics offer patient identification cards, but these do not replace your prescription. Read our guide to the medicinal cannabis prescription process for more information.
