Your consultation is the first step in your health journey. Here’s how to prepare and what to expect.
Starting a new treatment journey can feel unfamiliar, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.
At Cannabis Clinic, we’re here to make every step feel easy, respectful, and centred around you. Whether you’re new to medicinal cannabis or returning for a follow-up, this guide will help you feel prepared and confident ahead of your consultation.
Before Your Consultation
A little preparation can make a big difference. Here’s what we recommend doing before your appointment:
1. Request a health summary from your GP
One of the best ways to prepare is by providing us with a recent health summary, which should include:
- Your diagnosis history
- A list of current and past medications
- Any relevant specialist notes
This information gives your doctor a more complete picture of your health, allowing them to make more informed, personalised recommendations.
A Health Summary is not required to attend your consultation, but it will very much speed up the process of prescribing, as your doctor will need this to safely prescribe.
You can get your summary by:
- Contacting your GP directly
- Accessing your health portal (e.g. ManageMyHealth, MyIndici)
- Asking your GP for login access if needed
Under the Privacy Act, this is your right – and it should be free to request. Once received, email your summary to us before your appointment.
2. Complete your Patient Information Form
After booking, you’ll receive a Patient Information Form via email. Please fill this out before your consultation so your doctor can review your information in advance.
3. Book the type of consultation that suits you best
You can choose from:
- Telehealth (online video consultations)
- In-person consultations (available in Auckland, Nelson, and Hastings)
Telehealth: Quality Care, Wherever You Are
At Cannabis Clinic, we believe that access to healthcare shouldn’t be limited by location. We specialise in personalised, plant-based treatment plans that are tailored to your unique health needs – and telehealth makes it easier than ever to access care from anywhere in New Zealand.
Whether you’re in a busy city or a quiet rural town, our telehealth consultations connect you with our compassionate doctors and nurses who are here to guide you every step of the way – whether you’re just starting out or seeking ongoing support.
Booking is simple:
- Visit our website
- Choose a time that suits you
- Connect with us via secure video
We also offer extended hours, including evenings and weekends, so you can access care when it’s most convenient for you. No travel. No waiting rooms. Just expert care, from the comfort of your own space.
In-Person Consultations
Prefer to meet face-to-face? You’re always welcome to visit us at one of our in-person clinic locations in Auckland, Nelson, or Hastings.
In-person consultations provide a private, comfortable space to sit down with your doctor, ask questions, and explore treatment options in a calm, supportive environment.
Many patients appreciate the opportunity for that personal connection – especially if they’re new to medicinal cannabis or want to bring a support person along.
Our in-person clinics operate during standard business hours, and you can choose the location closest to you when booking online. Our friendly team at each location is here to make you feel welcomed and at ease from the moment you arrive.
What to Expect During Your Consultation
Your consultation is a supportive conversation between you and your doctor. It’s designed to help you explore whether medicinal cannabis might be suitable for your needs.
What your doctor will do:
- Ask about your current symptoms, goals, and treatment history
- Review your medical background and health summary
- Explain whether medicinal cannabis could be appropriate for you
- If applicable, discuss the different types of plant-based treatments (e.g. oils, capsules, or dried flower), how they work, and what they would recommend for your individual needs
If a prescription is suitable, your doctor will also walk you through:
- How to access your treatment
- What to expect from it
- How and when to follow up
There’s also time to ask questions – big or small. Our team is here to support you, not rush you.
