Accessing medicinal cannabis in Hawke’s Bay
Hawke’s Bay is one of the few regions where you can choose between seeing us in person and being seen from home.
We have a clinic in the region, so if you would rather have your consultation face to face, you can. If a video appointment suits you better, that is available too, and it makes no difference to what can be prescribed. Either way, your prescription is dispensed by our pharmacy and couriered to your address.
We see patients from across Hawke’s Bay, including Napier, Hastings, Havelock North, Taradale, Waipukurau, Waipawa and Wairoa. Whether you live close to our clinic or further away in the region, you can choose the consultation format that best suits your needs.
Medicinal cannabis is a prescription medicine and it is not a first-line treatment. It is generally considered when a condition has not responded well to other treatments you have been willing to try, so the first question at your appointment is whether it is a reasonable option for you rather than which product you would like.
Any doctor registered in New Zealand can prescribe it, including your own GP in Napier or Hastings. Many have had little occasion to prescribe these medicines and prefer not to, which is why patients come to us. If your GP has already prescribed for you, we can dispense without another consultation, subject to a review of your prescription.
If you are not sure whether it is worth pursuing, start with a free nurse call. It costs nothing, nothing is prescribed on it, and it is a straightforward way to find out whether a doctor’s consultation may be worthwhile.
Visiting our Hawke’s Bay clinic
Our Hawke’s Bay clinic is located in Havelock North, making in-person consultations available to patients across the region.
Clinic address
5/24 Porter Drive, Havelock North 4130, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
Opening hours
Tuesday and Thursday, 10am–5pm.
Appointments
All consultations must be booked in advance. Please arrange your appointment before visiting the clinic.
What an in-person appointment involves
An in-person consultation follows the same clinical process as a video appointment. Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, how long you have had them, what you have already tried, your mental health history and every other medicine and supplement you take.
Bring a list of your current medicines and supplements so your doctor can review them during the consultation. If your symptoms relate to an injury covered by ACC, bring your ACC claim number and any relevant information about your existing treatment.
Should you visit in person or choose a video consultation?
Both options allow you to discuss your symptoms, medical history and treatment options with a doctor. For many patients, video consultations offer a convenient alternative to travelling, while an in-person appointment may be preferable if you feel more comfortable discussing your health face to face.
Video consultations can also be useful if travelling to Havelock North is difficult or you would prefer to attend from home. Your doctor will assess your individual circumstances and advise on appropriate treatment options regardless of the consultation format.
Medication is dispensed by our pharmacy and couriered to your address, so you do not need to collect your prescription from the clinic after your appointment.
Planning your visit
Our clinic operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10am to 5pm. Book your appointment in advance and check the location and travel arrangements before setting off.
